Common Startup Challenges for Entrepreneurs

As startups are established, entrepreneurs often struggle for many reasons.  They either push through the challenges and succeed, or quit early on.  Every entrepreneur knows there will be obstacles.  Some of those are anticipated, some are not.  The best way to overcome them is to be prepared. Here are some challenges startups face:
  1.  Capital:  If entrepreneurs don’t have money to put into office space, products, or marketing, then they’re not going to get very far.
  2. Time:  If entrepreneurs don’t manage their time, everything will be put off and the company will stop growing (or not grow at all).
  3. Comfort Zone:  If entrepreneurs don’t put themselves beyond their comfort zone, they may miss opportunities that will make their startup thrive.
  4. Coach: If entrepreneurs don’t have a coach, they may not have the proper person to lean on when major decisions have to be made.
  5. Marketing:  If entrepreneurs ignore proper marketing channels, sales won’t grow and their startup will not survive.
  6. Plan: If entrepreneurs don’t have a plan in place, they may not be ready for the unexpected, which can cause their startup to go under, quickly.
Entrepreneurs need to be prepared for these challenges, and many others.  The key take-away from this is to plan ahead, have the right people by your side, and be ready for anything that may come your way. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Networking Mistakes to Avoid

Entrepreneurs and business professionals often attend networking events throughout their careers.  But if they go to these events without being prepared, they will fail. How do you handle networking events?  Do you feel successful when you leave? Here are a few mistakes you should avoid when networking: 1 – Not having a strategy.  Do you have this?  Are you using it at these events?  What is your purpose for attending?  What are you looking to get out of it?  If you do your research and land yourself at the perfect event, with your perfect target audience, if you don’t have a plan you won’t walk away a success. 2 – Focusing on selling only.  Many professionals just throw out sales pitches.  People come to these events to relax, socialize, and create relationships.  Ask questions instead.  Learn about them.  Find out their needs.  Don’t throw your business in their face. 3 – Not following-up after the events.  If you receive phone numbers or email addresses, that is great.  These contacts should be very valuable to you.  If you follow through with a short email or a quick call, you’re telling your new contacts they mean something to you.  They’ll remember you because of your efforts. Stand out above the crowd, and make a lasting impression.  You will succeed! rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Proactive Strategy: A Powerful Tool for Success

It’s necessary to take a pro-active approach when it comes to management.  Successful entrepreneurs take charge of their destiny; they don’t allow others to push them around.  A pro-active approach involves: – being fully aware of the dynamics of the market – taking actions that will prepare you in advance for changes that may occur – tailoring your organizational responses to different environmental factors as they change – keeping abreast of new ideas and technologies being introduced to the market – arming yourself with the knowledge that you need to succeed – designing appropriate plans of action that will make you succeed A pro-active approach helps to: – grow your revenue – spend time and money in more efficient ways – save time and money going forward – re-invest into your bottom line – prepare with a strategic plan If you want to have a business structure that is well aligned to carry out your own goals, missions, visions and objectives, then you’ll want to take a pro-active approach in your organization. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Setting Reachable Business Goals

It’s important to set goals for your business.  When you have well-defined goals, they will help your business grow, help you achieve your objectives, improve teamwork, improve collaboration, and help everyone understand the direction your business in heading towards. Remember to set SMART goals: – Specific – Measurable – Achievable – Relevant – Timely Here are some tips to help you establish and reach your goals: – Create a clear statement for your purpose. Clear mental images help you see through any setbacks that may come along. – Make sure you consistently go over your goals (monthly, quarterly, or annually).  This helps you keep them relevant and achievable. – Take action.  Be sure to fit the type of action to the scope of each problem.  Some problems may require a longer detailed plan of action. – Keep yourself scheduled, but stick to it.  Use a calendar app to help you, and you’ll see your productivity level rise. – Remember that not everything works out the way you want it to.  Don’t be afraid of failure.  Respond to challenges and opportunities positively and flexibly. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Time Management for Achieving Goals

Time management is an effective skill that helps you reach your goals in work and all through your life.  The important thing to remember is that it’s not about how much time you have…it’s about how effectively you manage it. If you want to start setting and achieving your goals, you need to seriously avoid distractions and bad habits.  You will have to focus on working hard instead.  So, you’ll need to find a good time management system and stick with it.  Pay attention to how you use your time, and you won’t fail to achieve your long-term goals. Stay balanced.  Follow a system that will help you get things done…one where you can prioritize work, family, and personal time. Here are some helpful time management tips:
  1.  Make sure your goals have a powerful meaning for wanting to achieve them.  If they don’t, then you could fall off track.
  2. Use the four quadrant time management system.  Decide between urgent and not urgent activities, and important and not important activities.
  3. Record your time in a journal for at least a week.  How was your time used?  Was time wasted?  How does this time fit into the four quadrant system?
  4. Tackle your biggest tasks in the morning.  This will give you the biggest momentum to help you through the rest of your day.
  5. Remember the 80-20 Rule.  80% of the efforts comes from 20% of the results.
  6. Develop good habits and get rid of bad ones.  Focusing on good habits allows you to get better at managing your time, making other good habits develop easier!
  7. Take frequent breaks while working.  Work for 1 hour and break for 15 mins (if you can).  Go for a short walk or meditate during that time.  You’ll have more energy and you’ll focus better when you return.

Are You Ready to Grow Your Business?

If you’re considering expanding your small business, first make sure you’re actually ready for growth.  Even if you’ve had recent business success, there are other things you should look at. Do you have regular customers? If you have a steady, growing base of customers that demand your product or service, then you may be ready for growth.  Repeat customers are great!  Sales have to be consistent, though.  If you see a sudden spike in customers, that doesn’t mean you’re ready to expand. Wait to see if that increase is temporary or consistent. Do your customers ask you to grow? Do they ask for more products/services?  Do they ask for you to be open longer hours?  Do they have any specific requests that you can’t currently fulfill?  If you know your business growth will satisfy your customers and increase sales, then you might want to invest in expanding. Do you have a consistent net income? If your profits are consistently increasing, then you may be ready for growth.  Don’t focus on short-term success.  If you do have a regular income, invest some of those profits into your business.  Hopefully expanding will also grow your income. How is your industry doing? Do you see a growth in your industry? Have you checked industry trends recently?  Is your market on the rise?  Don’t plan to expand if your industry is fading.  If your industry is not growing, you still might be able to expand your business by offering new products/services. Do you need more workers due to an overflow of business? If your demand is higher than you can handle, then you may want to expand your business by hiring more workers or getting a bigger space. Ask yourself these five questions before you expand your business.  If you feel you need to hash out these concerns with a professional business coach, contact me for a complimentary session. I’d love to help guide you through this process. Ways to Generate Ideas for Entrepreneurs

Coming up with a new venture can be difficult.  There are several methods to help an entrepreneur generate ideas. Here are a few that may be helpful: Focus Groups – In this group, a moderator usually leads a group of people through a discussion. They don’t just ask questions.  The group provides open-ended comments regarding a new product or service that can result in market success.  The group can also be a great resource for screening ideas and concepts. Brainstorming – This is a group method, where people often get stimulated by meeting with others and participating in organized group discussions/exercises. These groups don’t offer criticism, instead they give a high quantity of ideas. Brainstorming often results in success when the focus is on a specific product or area. Problem Solving/Analysis – Individuals obtain new ideas and solutions when they focus on specific problems.  They are provided with a list of problems and asked to discuss them (in a group), which often results in an entirely new product idea. Brainstorming and Idea-Generating

Brainstorming doesn’t have to be done in a roomful of other people.  It doesn’t have to be done in a group, in a fancy setting, or involve a large team of creative individuals.  It can be done on your own, in a familiar and comfortable setting, when you’re ready to generate ideas to enhance your business. First, make sure you are off all your electronics, to avoid distractions, and to give all your attention to your creative project at hand. Physical writing can activate your brain differently than typing does. Second, figure out why you are brainstorming.  Is it to generate ideas, solve a problem, or train your brain? Here are a few brainstorming techniques you might want to try:
  1. Word Bank:  Find the right words to use in a copy or a story.  Do this by finding specific kinds of words on specific topics.
  2. Word Association:  Choose words that say much more than they mean.  This is where context is everything.  This can be how you detail a train-of-thought that has you stuck in a rut.
  3. Questions:  Answer questions you already know and find questions you didn’t realize you had.
  4. Image Association:  Use a visual image to trigger ideas in context.
If one method doesn’t work, try another.  Try a combination of methods if needed.  Or simply make up your own technique.  Your main purpose is to try to reboot the way you’re presently thinking. PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo

Ways to Achieve Business Success

While there are thousands of books written about being successful in a business, there are also thousands of topics regarding achievements in business.  Here are a list of some of the more common principles: 1 – Fearless.  Jumping into a new business venture, and leaving your day-to-day 9-5 job that provided you with a steady paycheck, is considered fearless.  Separate yourself from the crowd.  Manage your own fears and face those hurdles. 2 – Partners.  Find like-minded entrepreneurs who believe in the same mission as you. Partners can help each other move forward.  Having different sources of energy and a great team for inspiration can help you achieve business success. 3 – Attitude.  Start your business with the right attitude.  Know what’s important and develop values around what you do.  Creating wealth to help others and solve problems means you have the right attitude needed to obtain a successful business. 4 – Family.  Most of us who want to achieve success in our lives also want to share the wealth with our families.  It’s important to think about success beyond material things. Success means having a positive influence on those you call family. Being successful isn’t just about wealth and power.  It’s truly about being happy, sharing your success with others, and leaving behind a legacy. PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo
