Strategies for New Entrepreneurs

It’s easy for new entrepreneurs to become overwhelmed when running a business.  Staying focused on your goals is essential. And even if you have a concrete plan in place, you should still consider doing these few things to ensure success.   1 – Do research and KNOW who your competitors are.  Use their weaknesses to your advantage.  Your business will stand out more if you have a better direction. 2 – Make sure you have a few months of operating expenses in the bank.  There are always rough patches that arise and if you’re thrifty enough with your money, those hard times won’t pull you (or your business) under.  Be prepared. 3 – Find a niche. Don’t try and expand to large markets right from the start.  Niche marketing is often cheaper and will lead you to more targeted customers.  Create your business around your niche, including your company slogan.   4 – Listen to your customers.  Actively listen to what they have to say.  Take their considerations and change your marketing plan if needed.  Respond to new trends and even request new ideas.   5 – Your new business is always going to change.  Be prepared to accept the changes and adapt to them accordingly. And be flexible.  Know that where you start now is not where you’ll end up. PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo

Defining Leadership

Every leader has their own style.  And their methods will vary because of the multiple factors they are influenced by.  Here are some examples of what leadership is… 1 – Creating a better environment 2 – Knowing yourself, and your team, very well 3 – Giving your team the tools to succeed 4 – Providing positive, authentic influence 5 – Knowing right from wrong (portray confidence) 6 – Building around a common goal (or goals) 7 – Having the ability to solve problems 8 – Helping others/feeling satisfaction 9 – Building a generation of leaders 10 – Inspiring your team and building followership 11 – Actively listening to others There is not a specific formula to being a good leader.  Leaders should be authentic, have a good personality, and be naturally motivational.  They should want to teach and provide as much leadership as possible to their team.  Great leaders make for great business! Is Your Sleep Affecting Your Business?

If you are a business owner, you are probably routinely running on very little sleep.  Even though many entrepreneurs view this as a normal pattern for themselves, it goes against the fact that adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, each night. High-achieving people represent a small portion of society, and this small portion of society is probably sleep deprived.  Maybe they are so driven that they can overcome the effects it has on their body and mind. Whether they admit they’re exhausted or not, the fact is YOU NEED SLEEP. Your entire body pays the price when it isn’t well rested.  Some side effects of not enough sleep are:
  1. Unable to focus
  2. Gain weight
  3. Increased exhaustion (burning out)
  4. Under-performed memory
While some of us don’t think we need a lot of sleep, we need to be reminded that sleep is highly correlated to your mood, weight, concentration, and memory.  Don’t let your productivity decline just because you want extra hours (awake) to yourself at night. Get enough sleep! Your body (and your business) will thank you! PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo

Business Strategy – What Is It?

It’s a long term plan of action designed to achieve a particular set of goals in a business.  A business strategy is supposed to strengthen the performance of a business.  To achieve certain goals, a business needs to continue on a specific plan that is used as a road-map to success. Business strategies are a great way to see the whole picture…like a map of the business.  It helps owners adjust activities and align visions so goals are being met.   Here are some examples that may be in a strategy map:
  1. Financial Perspective
  2. Customer Perspective
  3. Process Perspective
  4. Growth Perspective
Plan to update your map frequently, reviewing it against any successes and failures. While the plan is to execute the strategy without failure, a business owner needs to be realistic and know that unforeseen circumstances can arise. Strategies should be built to sustain any downfall, or failure, a business might encounter.  A strategy map should be designed to give the business an advantage, to build up the successes, and to ride out the storms.   For examples of strategy maps, click HERE. 4 Tips to Become an Active Listener

If you want to build meaningful relationships and advance your career, you will need to become an active listener.  Listening shows respect for others, letting them know you really care about their interests.  Here are 4 tips to help you master the skill of active listening. #1.  Being Present.  Don’t be thinking of something else while “pretending” to listen to what someone else has to say.  Be aware that people do notice if you’re really listening.  Focus and don’t allow your mind to wonder. #2.  Make Eye Contact.  Making eye contact gives the other person a reason for them to believe you are genuinely interested in what they have to say.   #3.  Don’t Interrupt.  Allowing the other person to complete their thoughts shows respect by being patient.  Don’t interrupt them even if you want to respond to something they just told you.  Let them fully complete what they have to say before jumping in.   #4.  Don’t Change the Subject.  Changing the subject within an ongoing conversation only displays a lack of interest and indicates what you have to say is more important.  Wait until the discussion is completely finished before changing the topic.   Most of us can listen well, and instinctively know the correct way to do it.  But, following through with active listening can be very difficult.  It requires a lot of effort and an obvious interest in the people around you.   PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo

5 Problem Solving Strategies

Business owners are always looking for ways to problem solve.  Sometimes the simplest strategies are the ones we never even think about.  Here are 5 problem solving strategies to help your business succeed.
  1. Sleep on it…
  2. Find out what can wait and what can’t…
  3. Break it down to bite size pieces…
  4. Work on a timeline…
  5. Use your network – no reason to go it alone…
#1.  Sleep can actually be an active function.  Sleep improves our memory and enables us to consolidate new information with the knowledge we already have.  It also changes the quality of our stored information.  We also often wake up with solutions to a problem that we need solved. #2.  Time wasted in your business always equals wasted money.  And that’s not a good thing.  Since you want to be effective and productive, you will need to figure out what can wait and what can’t.  What brings you the most profit?  What wastes your time?  Make a list and discover what will make your business successful. #3.  If you’re feeling overwhelmed, break your tasks into smaller pieces.  Figure out what needs to get done first.  Make a list of priorities and focus on each step at a time. #4.  Businesses tend to go in all sorts of different directions.  The key to knowing which challenges are next is to create a business timeline.  Start with years 1 to 5, refine your approach for years 5 to 10, maturing for year 10 and beyond. #5.  You can gain access to knowledge from professionals in almost every type of business when you’re involved in a networking group.  Don’t try and find the answers to everything on your own.  Use the power of your contacts to enhance your business. The Fear of Failure

When it comes to our businesses, many of us have been so afraid of failing at something that we decided not to try it at all.  That fear of failing can be immobilizing.  That same fear stops us from doing things that can move our business forward to achieve our goals. If you view fear as a learning experience, the mistakes made will help you to make better decisions for your business.  There are many opportunities ahead and you’ll miss them if you let your failures stop you. Failures also allow us to learn things about ourselves we never knew before, like how strong we are, or how determined we are, or how effective our motivation can lead to greater business success.  Valuable insights can come after a failure.  Accept and learn from them! One trick to overcome the fear of failure is to set goals.  Goals help us define where we want our business to go.  If we tackle them with fear, we are most likely not going to take any chances.  So, don’t set big goals.  Set small goals.  Setting small goals can give you “tiny wins” to increase your confidence.  This confidence boost will help you set more goals, or bigger goals, without the huge fear of failure ahead.   And you’ll see a difference in yourself and your business. YOUR CHALLENGE:  Set 2 small goals each month for 6 months.  After 6 months, start setting larger goals.  Have some of your fears of failure subsided? If you would like further information or you have any questions about this blog, you can email me at pjweiland@actioncoach.com or call 847-739-3079.

Coach Your Brain!

Feeling like your business life is full of distractions?  Just our digital devices alone make us hard to focus.  Now think about all you have to juggle during your working hours and how staying focused and productive is often extremely hard to do. As an Entrepreneur, you have to worry about employees, customers/clients, phone calls, follow-ups, emails, meetings, inventory, and the list goes on and on… Here are some tips that may help your brain multitask without becoming overloaded or overwhelmed! Your brain gets excited when you are doing a lot of tasks at once, but the downside is that we often make mistakes while multitasking.  So here are some ways in which we can coach our brain to focus:
  1.  At the beginning of your day, work on your toughest tasks first.  As the day goes on, our brain gets tired.  So leave the more mindless work for later in the day.
  2. Find your ultimate “focus” time each day, and work on your toughest tasks at that time.  Do you work better in the morning?  Are you more focused in the evening? Choose your time and allow yourself to coach your brain back to focus mode.
  3. Practice concentration by giving yourself time to focus on only ONE task at a time.  This helps us to retrain our brain from distraction mode to focus mode. If you put aside 30 minutes each day to “focus” your brain, then that short distraction time will allow yourself to stay more focused throughout the day.
Our brains are mainly trained to be unfocused because we spend so much time multitasking.  It’s time to coach your brain into a new pattern so focusing isn’t so hard and multitasking becomes easier.  Your owe it to yourself…and your business! PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo
