The Benefits of Engaged Employees

Employee engagement is more recognized in today’s workforce because management is finally realizing just how important it is to keep employees happy. But, there is still a low percentage of companies who actively engage employees.  Therefore, disengagement is costing the U.S. billions of dollars annually. It’s important to know the benefits of having engaged employees, and how you can start engaging yours right away. 1 – Employee Satisfaction:  Unhappy employees drains time and money from a company.  When engaged, they feel satisfied within their position.  They have a greater connection to the company.  And their quality of work will improve. 2 – Lower Turnover Rates:  Since hiring and onboarding is expensive, investing time into engaging your employees will help retain top employees and lower turnover rates. 3 – Productivity Goes Up:  When employees are satisfied, they not only improve their quality of work, but they also work faster and harder.  They love what they do, they are engaged in the company, and they feel important. 4 – Loyal Employees:  Engaged, satisfied employees are more loyal to a company.  They become company ambassadors.  Understanding how employees feel about the company they work for also affects how customers feel about the company.  Happy employees, happy customers.   PJ's New Pic (smaller)ActionCoach-logo

Time Management in the Workplace

If you really want to work smarter and be more productive, then you need to change the way you work.  If you think you don’t have enough time to apply time management into your workplace, think again.  It doesn’t matter which time management tips you use, just make sure you use them consistently. Here are some quick time management tips:
  1. Organize your workday into 15-minute chunks.  It’s long enough to get something done, but short enough to find in your day.
  2.  Shut you door to eliminate drop-in visitors.  This is very helpful when you need to concentrate on large projects.
  3. Eliminate distractions.  Send calls to voicemail and turn off email notification.  Check messages in the morning, after lunch, and then again before you leave for the day.
  4. If you are thinking of a million other things that need to get done, write them down.  This will help you to remember them later and you’ll get them out of your head so you can focus on the task at hand.
  5. Create a to-do list.  Schedule tasks in a calendar and cross things off as you complete them.  This not only gets things done, but it will be satisfying as well.
These are all very simple tips that will greatly improve your efficiency and productivity throughout your workday. PJ's New Pic (smaller)ActionCoach-logo

Promoting Creativity in the Workplace

Even though managers put a lot of emphasis on ensuring everyone is focused and getting the job done properly, it’s important they encourage creativity and innovation within the workplace. Employees are not just good at one specific task.  They can also come up with ways to improve their job (or a product or service).  There are many creative ways to help companies, but management needs to encourage this to happen. Here are some tips to help give employees a little creativity within a business: – Look at all the procedures that are in place, and if any of them are not serving a significant benefit that can be measured, then eliminate them. – Consider rewarding the creativity of all employees.  Do this publicly so others can see that it’s appreciated and recognized within the company. – Give employees some time to be creative.  Let someone spend up to 20% of their work day testing out a way they might improve a specific task.  It may benefit the company in the long run. – Encourage teamwork to help employees bounce ideas off of each other.  It can help them work out potential problems or spot new ones.  It can also help overall team morale and improve company culture. How to Improve on Productivity as a Leader

Strong management is key to a successful company.  And employees thrive with powerful leaders.  So, it’s worth investing time and resources into developing effective leadership skills. Becoming a masterful leader takes time, but there are some things you can do right now to better yourself in your leadership position. Here are a few ways to increase productivity as a leader: 1 – Set clear goals and expectation for each quarter – this ensures that your employees agree with and understand their objectives. 2 – Take advantage of organizational tools – this way you have the infrastructure in place to support your work, and the rest of your team will follow. 3 – Schedule Short Meetings – long meetings are boring and take up too much of your team’s valuable time.  Schedule 10-15 minute meetings and you’ll be amazed by how much time you’ll save. 4 – Become closer to your team – this will allow you to communicate with them more effectively. 5 – Write everything down – take notes at meetings so you can prioritize your responsibilities and have less of a chance to forget important details. These small chances to your schedule can help you lead a more productive team. PJ's New Pic (smaller)ActionCoach-logo

Improving Teamwork in the Workplace

Good teamwork helps to improve morale in the workplace.  Workers become more productive and this ultimately improves profits.  It also makes problem solving easier. If your company does not have good teamwork, then it’s going to be difficult to succeed.  This can result in a lack of collaboration, ineffective communication, loss of productivity, and loss of business. Here are some tips to improve the teamwork in your company: – Encourage your employees to attend social events.  In low-pressure, informal surroundings, team members will get to know each other and form bonds. – Document roles and responsibilities so everyone can work together effectively.  If your employees know their responsibilities and the responsibilities of their team members, work gets delegated properly and everyone will work more effectively. – Make sure all employees are clear regarding long-term goals of the company.  Company goals will influence team communications and keep everyone moving in the same direction. – Show gratitude by giving formal recognition for employee achievements.  Teamwork will improve when employees are rewarded for helping one another. Time Management for Achieving Goals

Time management is an effective skill that helps you reach your goals in work and all through your life.  The important thing to remember is that it’s not about how much time you have…it’s about how effectively you manage it. If you want to start setting and achieving your goals, you need to seriously avoid distractions and bad habits.  You will have to focus on working hard instead.  So, you’ll need to find a good time management system and stick with it.  Pay attention to how you use your time, and you won’t fail to achieve your long-term goals. Stay balanced.  Follow a system that will help you get things done…one where you can prioritize work, family, and personal time. Here are some helpful time management tips:
  1.  Make sure your goals have a powerful meaning for wanting to achieve them.  If they don’t, then you could fall off track.
  2. Use the four quadrant time management system.  Decide between urgent and not urgent activities, and important and not important activities.
  3. Record your time in a journal for at least a week.  How was your time used?  Was time wasted?  How does this time fit into the four quadrant system?
  4. Tackle your biggest tasks in the morning.  This will give you the biggest momentum to help you through the rest of your day.
  5. Remember the 80-20 Rule.  80% of the efforts comes from 20% of the results.
  6. Develop good habits and get rid of bad ones.  Focusing on good habits allows you to get better at managing your time, making other good habits develop easier!
  7. Take frequent breaks while working.  Work for 1 hour and break for 15 mins (if you can).  Go for a short walk or meditate during that time.  You’ll have more energy and you’ll focus better when you return.

Company Culture: What is it?

Company culture is something that already exists within a company…it’s the company’s personality.  It defines the environment in which employees work. It’s a variety of elements that include: Environment Mission Value Ethics Expectations Goals Ask yourself these questions: Do you have your own plans for your company’s development? Do you have teams that are growing within your organization? Do your employees have common behaviors? What does their job mean to them? Would they want to leave if they had the chance to? Do they get along with others within their team? Do your employees seem happy at work? These are symptoms of either a healthy or unhealthy culture.  You need to know how your employees are reacting to what you’re building. Employees tend to enjoy work when their needs and values are consistent with those in the workplace. They develop better relationships with coworkers and are usually more productive. It’s important to seek out employees who share your company’s culture.  Businesses with a strong company culture have happier employees, increased productivity, and higher employee retention rates. How to Engage for Success

How attached are you to the way you run your business?  Are you willing to do things differently?  Are you able to organize your day differently?  If you want your employees more engaged, you may need to make several changes that you are currently not comfortable with.  Can you do that? As the leader of your company, it’s necessary to get out and talk to your employees.  Help them when necessary.  Ask them about their families or about something that interests them.  How much do you really know about them?  How much do they really know about you? What about future plans of your company?  You may know what your visions are for your business, but do your employees?  They need to know how your plans will benefit them, or cause them problems.  Do you ever really listen to your employees?  Do you hear what they really have to say?  Are you developing a team who all know and envision your future plans for your company? If you are not working together with your employees for success, celebrating achievements and sharing rewards, then you will want to rethink how you engage with them. Set aside some time on a regular basis to talk to your employees about how, together, you can improve the business.  Find out what ideas your team has.  Actively listen to what they have to say.  What could you all do differently, as a team, or individually, to improve your service or to increase your business success?  What is really worth investing in? Working with your team, engaging them with conversation, working towards company goals, and increasing individual success, not only improves business but will help you retain your best employees, but it will reduce turnover and make a huge difference to the success of your business! Keeping Employees Engaged During the Holidays

The countdown to the holidays can be exciting and stressful, especially at the workplace.  The holiday spirit usually brings energy, creativity, and motivation to employees.  But, managers often have a hard time keeping their team members on task. The end of the year comes with completion of big projects or milestones, which can be motivating yet difficult.  So, it’s important for managers to have compassion and know that the holidays are part of an emotional season. Here are a few ways to keep your team going throughout the holiday season:
  1. Celebrate Success – with phone calls, thank you cards, through emails, and through positive reinforcement.
  2. Set Goals – to keep your team members productive and on track.
  3. Encourage Time Off – make sure your employees know that it’s important for them to spend time with loved ones, to have something to look forward to, to recharge their batteries.
  4. Schedule Regular Meetings – keep everyone in the loop, that way they feel important and are less likely to resist authority.
  5. Create an Enjoyable Environment – make sure to create an atmosphere of acceptance, unity, and friendship.  Employees will become more motivated in a positive workplace.
While holidays are hectic, and business is still going on, it’s extremely beneficial to make sure your employees are happy, healthy, and look forward to coming back in the new year.  Productive team members make for great business! PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo

Prevent Illness in the Workplace

It’s wintertime and many of us will be suffering from colds and of course, the flu.  There are ways to help prevent illnesses from spreading throughout the office.  Let’s try and make it through this winter without getting sick.
  1.  Wash Hands:  Everything is touched in the common workplace.  Door handles, laptops, light switches, drawer handles, keyboards…everything is susceptible to our germs.  Wash your hands regularly during work hours.  Your colleagues will thank you.
  2. Don’t Touch Others:  While you can’t stop your colleagues from sneezing or coughing, you can stop the spread of their colds (and yours) by avoiding handshakes.  Keep your distance, if you can, especially during Winter.
  3. Exercise:  Boost your immune system through a healthier lifestyle.  Eat a balanced diet and always get enough sleep.  Try walking during lunch hour or biking to work, if you can.  You don’t have to go to the gym.  Just 30 minutes a day walking is all you really need.
  4.  Take Time Off:  If you’re sick, take a day off work.  Don’t take your illness to the office.  Stay home and get healthy.  It’s better to have 1 person sick than half the office.  If you have deadlines to meet, ask to work from home while you’re under the weather.
This advice is not going to stop people from getting sick, but it could help prevent the spread of germs in the workplace.  Winter is coming fast!  Stay healthy!  Do your part and help prevent your workplace from spreading germs! PJ's New Pic (smaller) ActionCoach-logo
