Relaxing Techniques for Hectic Workdays

Consistent stress can take a toll on your emotional and physical health.  There is often daily stress in the workplace.  That’s why it’s important to have some techniques in place to help you activate your body’s natural relaxation response. Here are a few techniques to fit into your daily work schedule, to help reduce stress, increase energy levels, boost your mood, and possibly improve your overall health:
  1. Practice Deep Breathing – This exercise can be done in your office, in your car, or in the staff lounge.  All you need is a quiet, uninterrupted location to take some deep breaths.  It will help clear your mind for more focused energy.
  2. Listen to Music – If you have an office you can play music in, then do it.  Put on some of your favorite music while you work.  You’d be amazed at how relaxing it can make you, and productive too.  Maybe even wear earbuds if you have nearby co-workers.  Do whatever it takes to get you some well-deserved music time.
  3. Use Essential Oils – Plug in a diffuser, add your favorite scent(s), and work away.  You’ll find it very calming, and your office will smell amazing.  Just make sure others don’t come into your space to relax, too.
  4. Go for a Walk – Take some time (during a break or your lunch hour) and walk around the building, outside, or to a nearby park.  Maybe listen to music while you walk.  Don’t talk on the phone.  Don’t go with a co-worker and talk about work.  Just be with yourself and take in the surroundings.  It will calm you and your nerves!
  5. Use a Stress Ball – Yes, they actually do work.  Squeezing a stress ball works out the tension in your muscles, relaxing you enough to continue on with your long day. And it’s something small you can use multiple times a day (sitting, walking, in meetings, etc).
  6. Get Organized – Find time every day to free your desk from overwhelming, overcrowding clutter.  Organizing your surroundings can improve your mood, allowing you to be relaxed and more productive.

Steps for Success (onboarding for Interns)

Like any other onboarding process, the experience for Interns should be positive and productive.  If your onboarding program is successful, your Inters will feel valued and satisfied, become some of your best full-time employees in the future, and benefit your company in a very big way. Steps for Success: 1 – FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Interns accept positions months before graduation.  They see your program as an opportunity to grow as a professional.  Begin the onboarding process weeks in advance, giving them time to meet employees, ask questions, and to see your company as a great place to work. 2 – COMPANY CULTURE:  Organize a time with the Intern to come to the company for a visit.  Introduce them to the rest of your staff.  Give them a chance to see the company culture, the business in action, the employees hard at work, and your relationship with the team as a whole. 3 – ALWAYS CLARIFY:  Make sure the Intern knows what he/she is expecting to get out of the internship.  Make sure the manager who works with the Intern knows what he/she is expecting to get from the Intern.  Create a work plan with weekly goals, so there is more than just oral clarification. 4 – BE READY TO LEARN:  There are Interns who may have skills that you do not.  Be prepared to learn.  This will benefit your development and make them feel valued and included. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Good Communication = Business Success

Good communication isn’t just about solving conflicts in the workplace, it’s also about building relationships and building a successful business. Good communication helps employees feel heard.  Good communication makes information easy and clear to understand.  And good communication makes people better listeners.  All of these lead to higher customer satisfaction, happier employees, and increased revenue. When employees feel disrespected, or disregarded, there is often tension or conflict that follow.  If there is good communication within the team, employees can express their needs easier.  This leads to increased performance and higher employee engagement.  This also improves connections between team members, leading to a more positive work environment. Good communication helps create better client relationships.  Communication is different between satisfied and unsatisfied customers.  If employees are trained to communicate effectively, they will be better equipped to handle client relationships.  This leads to happier customers, which also means profits increase. Good communication helps build a better company culture, increases sales and production, enhances employee engagement, and creates a positive environment for innovation. Spring Cleaning Ideas for Your Business

Spring cleaning is not just about cleaning and organizing your closets and cars.  It’s also a great opportunity to clean and organize your business.  Spring is on it’s way.  Are you ready to get started? Here are some ideas: 1 – Since taxes are on your to-do list, why not clean your books.  Get your accounting system organized.  It may be a long process right now, but it will streamline the process for next year, and years to come. 2 – Update and organize your website.  Now is a good time to update your services or products.  Make sure all your links are working.  Make sure all your contact info is correct.  Don’t miss business opportunities because your website is not clean and organized. 3 – If you have a desk-full of papers, or a box-full, get rid of them.  Take some time to scan documents and save them to your computer, or organize them in folders and put them away where you can’t see them.  The less you see, the less anxious you get, and the more productive you become. 4 – Actually clean your office.  Get rid of the clutter.  Purchase tools to organize office supplies.  Create a system that helps you keep track of papers so your desk stays clean.  Surround yourself with inspirational quotes and motivational phrases.  Organize your space so you feel accomplished every day! rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

6 Ways to Engage Your Employees

Engaged employees are happier, perform better, and provide a better customer experience. If you’re looking to engage your employees, increase employee retention, and ultimately improve performance & revenue, then you’ll want to use these strategies in the workplace: 1 – Give your employees what they need.  Help them succeed by making sure they have the needed tools and technology to do their jobs effectively. 2 – Train your employees.  Employees want to learn within their position.  Provide and encourage training.  You will also see a rise in retention rate. 3 – Encourage relationships.  Employees want to connect with coworkers.  It’s important to their job satisfaction.  Social interaction is necessary for engagement. 4 – Lead by example.  Create positive engagement by being a great boss.  Employees will stay at their jobs longer if they have responsible leadership. 5 – Listen to your employees.  They want their concerns, suggestions, and ideas heard.  This will empower them to work harder and more productively. 6 – Celebrate accomplishments.  Show your employees appreciation and give praise when it’s deserved.  Recognition is extremely important and many employees will leave their jobs if they don’t get it. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Simple Organizational Tips for Your Workspace

Let’s face it.  We all lose things.  But when we’re disorganized, especially at work, it doesn’t look good.  Let’s appear to have it all together, instead of looking like a scatter brain.  Here are some organization tips to help you get through the average work day. 1 – Put items (papers/projects) into three different categories:  Toss It, File It, Do It Whether you keep individual boxes in your office, have separate drawers for these things, or just keep them in neat piles on your desk, make sure you organize them.  Everything must go in one of these three categories. 2 – Clear off your desk. You want to see your desk.  You don’t want to move something every time you need to work on a project.  Remember, as you go through papers, add them to one of the three categories we just discussed.  Keep pens, pencils, and scissors in a nice looking container/organizer on your desk (or in a drawer).  Keep writing pads handy for notes, but out of the way (again, in a drawer).  Clutter just disorganizes the mind and makes people anxious.  Keep it neat and tidy! 3 – Think Technology. Technology can be your friend, if you’re willing to let it.  Apps on your phone or on your computer/laptop will allow you to get rid of paper piles, note pads, calendars, calculators, etc.  All those items can be accessed digitally instead of cluttering up your desk space. An organized space helps keep an organized mind, which leads to greater efficiency and productivity. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

Can you sell open opportunities to top-talent job seekers?

If you’re looking for top talent for your company, you will need to stand out from your competition and make a great first impression.  In most cases, you have a limited amount of time to sell your opportunity to a job seeker, so how can you entice someone to join your team? Have an elevator pitch prepared.  That’s right, it’s not just for job seekers.  It’s also for employers who need to impress quality workers.  Your pitch should be no longer than 1-minute in length. Focus on the top selling points to keep job seekers engaged and excited. Here are a few things to add to your pitch:
  • Share any career growth opportunities.  What does that look like at your company? Many job seekers don’t have a way to grow within their current companies, so they look elsewhere.  Tell them how you invest in your employees.
  • Explain your employee benefits.  Share information about healthcare, vacation time, employer-provided education benefits, and any other benefits that might put your company first on their list.
  • Brag about your company culture.  If you have an amazing culture and positive employee morale, brag about it.  Share stories of past parties or upcoming events that will make the job seeker want to be a part of your company.
Have your elevator pitch ready at all times.  You never know when you might run into someone who’s perfect for your company.  Maybe even have it typed up in a one-page document that you can share via text or email.  When you hire the right individuals, your business will improve productivity and profitability. rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo

How to Prioritizing Your Time in the Office

With our lives becoming more busy these days, we need to find a way to help prioritize our time.  Here are some simple ideas to help make your time in the office less stressful.
  1. Plan your day the night before.  Try to figure out how long each task with take, so you can map out your day.  Make sure to include your morning routine and your lunch break.  Making a list of these timed tasks will help you stay on a routine throughout the day.
  2. Be flexible.  You may need to adjust your schedule for new projects or other unplanned things that come up during your day.  To do this, add a couple 15-minute slots into your schedule with no tasks.  You can use these to catch-up on unplanned tasks, to read or go for a walk, or to just get ahead on your to-do list.
  3. Do the most important tasks first.  Plan to take on the tougher, more important projects first, when you’re the most alert and ready to work.  Plus, you won’t have to worry about them for the rest of the day.
  4. Eliminate distractions.  Don’t check your phone and email all day long.  Give yourself 5 or 10 minutes at the top of every hour, or every 2 hours, to check your messages or respond to emails.  This will help keep you focused and on track.
  5. Stay mindful.  Keep your calendar close and your desk clear of clutter.  Remain mindful of where you are, giving yourself ample space to work, and checking tasks off your list as you go.
  6. Delegate some projects.  Put some trust in others and give some of your not-so-fun work to someone who doesn’t mind doing it.  When we work on tasks we don’t like, if often pushes us off course because we find ways to avoid them.  Try to only work on tasks you enjoy.  It really does make a difference.

Guide to Employee Engagement

Employee engagement indicates how happy/content employees are in their jobs.  It goes beyond activities, games, and events.  Engaged employees see the whole company and understands their purpose/vision.  They also know exactly where and how they fit in. When a company has employees who are engaged appropriately, they get the following: – High levels of productivity – Better retention rates – Better decision making – Increased sense of health and well-being – Decreased healthcare costs – Boost to their bottom line Having engaged employees lead to a great company culture, which can be a powerful way of transforming an organization. Employers should make sure their employees: – Feel that their work is meaningful and makes a difference – Feel valued, trusted, and respected – Feel secure and self-confident An effective engagement strategy and a highly engaged workforce is more likely to retain top performers and attract new talent.  This leads to a more successful organization! rsz_2018-headshotActionCoach-logo
